The Road Construction at Lake Louise Challenge:

As the summer sun casts its warm glow over the mountainous terrain, road construction crews descend upon the Lake Louise area, tasked with improving infrastructure and ensuring the safety of travelers. While these efforts are commendable in the long run, they unavoidably lead to temporary inconveniences for those navigating the region by private vehicles.

Where exactly is Lake Louise, and where will the construction take place?

Lake Louise Village is right by the Trans Canada Highway , about 400 meters from the highway exit. The lake is about 4.5 km up a steep hill from the village. The road between the village and the lake is pretty narrow and winding and exactly where the construction will occur. This road has always been extremely busy and clogged for long periods, even without construction. The Lake Louise shore parking lot is full almost all the time. If you get there and there is no parking spot for you (which is most likely the case), the traffic personnel will navigate you through the whole parking lot right back down to Lake Louise Village. There are no places to pull over, and U-turns are prohibited on the way down. If you are lucky and get a spot at Lake Louise Shore (consider yourself a lottery winner), there is paid parking in effect from 3 a.m. to 7 p.m. between May 17th and October 14th, 2024. The fee is $36.75 per vehicle per day, and there is no hourly rate. Needless to say, Lake Louise is extremely popular. To make things even more complicated, the turn-off to the famous Moraine Lake is right on Lake Louise Drive. You have a good idea by now that getting to Lake Louise by car is going to be difficult. The construction work along the Lake Louise road can result in delays and detours, testing the patience of even the most seasoned travelers. Increased traffic congestion and limited access routes may necessitate careful planning and flexibility from visitors, particularly during peak travel times.

New rules for access to Moraine Lake:

Adding to the situation's complexity is a recent regulation from Parks Canada regarding access to Moraine Lake . Under this new regulation, Moraine Lake is only accessible by commercial vehicles. This decision came after a parking predicament of the last several years.

I have been visiting Moraine Lake in one capacity or another for almost 25 years.

This includes working as an educator with Parks Canada and as a driver/guide, so I thought

I would take my shot at telling you about my relationship with that lake!

Capturing the perfect image of Moraine Lake:

Can you imagine that after all this time relating the same stories to visitors over and repeatedly, I still pull out my camera and I still take pictures of the same place?

Somehow, I have this feeling that I want to capture the stunning beauty of that lake and take it home with me. Maybe, just maybe, if I get the right image, I could make it a part of me. And even though I cannot seem to capture that perfect image, I keep trying. Einstein said, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results." So, I guess the beauty of that place has done exactly that to me and made me a little insane!

Laugh Out Loud!!!! And I don't feel so ridiculous, and I feel justified about the strong emotions I carry for Moraine Lake because when I bring the visitors to my favourite vista, they have that same visceral response that I do every time I get there: WOW! There are variances; some are slow and drawn out, and some are sharp and quick, and everything in between. One thing is the same, though, the surprise factor.

The Surprise Factor of Moraine Lake:

Each and every time. Surprise in what? In its beauty and how stunning this place is.

The colour is absolutely captivating. Not much compares to it!

I'm sad when Thanksgiving arrives in mid-October, and I can no longer drive there because the road is closed to motor traffic, although I can get there on my cross-country skis during the winter thanks to Parks Canada track setting the road. More energetic folks will snowshoe up the 13 km (8 miles). During the winter months, one has to work hard to get to the lake, but the payoff is sensational. Moraine Lake stands at almost 1,900 meters elevation (about 6,000 feet), so it freezes over and is blanketed in soft, white, fluffy snow. Stunning as it is during those magical months, I confess to being happy when it's easily accessible again in the spring. At that point, it's only just beginning to melt. And it looks quite different

again to how we see it in mid-summer, fall and then, winter. It, like many places in the Rockies , has a rhythm, or a heartbeat, if you will. I am one of the very fortunate people who have the privilege of experiencing all of that.

The colour of Moraine Lake:

During Covid, I took a break from my many years of guiding in the Rockies. The first time back, of course, I pulled out the camera, and my fetish started again. From my favourite vantage point (which means going up 150 steps onto the Rock Pile that overlooks the lake), the water during summer looks like turquoise ink. It doesn't look like regular glacial water if there is such a thing. The canoes floating on the lake below appear surreal as they reflect their own colours into the blue-green water. I could go on and on about the colour of the lake, but it is best for you to look at the pictures splattered all over the internet or just come and see for yourselves.

This last summer, to feed my obsession with this place, I was doing something a bit different. I worked for Canmore Travel , driving a shuttle up to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. I got to spend a whole hour at each lake, more time than any other tour I used to offer (unless it was a hiking tour). You are no longer permitted to drive up there on your own. Everyone must take the shuttle service now because of how busy it has become and how narrow the access road is.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can hike or bike to Moraine Lake. However, hiking or biking the Moraine Lake Road might not be the most pleasant experience since the road is narrow, twisty and has no shoulders. Also, there are not many places with a view since most of it is in the trees. A round trip from Lake Louise shore is about 29 km (if you are lucky enough to find a parking spot at Lake Louise shore) or even more from Lake Louise village (it depends on where you can find parking).

Is there any food option at Moraine Lake ?

There is one coffee shop at Moraine Lake Lodge . The opening hours are usually between 9am and 4:30pm, but every season is slightly different, and the opening hours may vary. There are typically long lines, so we do recommend packing some snacks and water with you.

The weather in the Rockies is very unpredictable, changing rapidly and often. Moraine Lake has become so popular that Parks Canada had to rethink how to manage traffic, preserve the area, and still bring visitors to enjoy this fantastic lake. They decided only to allow commercial vehicles to avoid the parking craziness of the past (no more fistfights over parking spots, YAY!)

LAKE LOUISE:

Lake Louise is 2 km (1.2 miles) long with an elevation of around 1731 meters (5679 feet) and a depth of 70 m (229.6 feet). The moment your eyes lay on Lake Louise for the first time is breathtaking, and any photos or videos you may have seen before your trip do not give that same sensation.

Seeing the Victoria Glacier in the back of the lake, hanging on the steep mountain, is a postcard-perfect moment.

Lake Louise has a lovely shoreline walk for anyone looking to stretch their legs after the drive from Canmore / Banff .

On the shore of the lake, you’ll find the iconic Chateau Lake Louise hotel, which was built in 1882 and first opened by the Canadian Pacific Railway. Even at that time in history, visitors from around the world were drawn to the stunning mountains and opportunities for climbing. The luxurious hotel has an amazing lake view in some of its prestigious rooms that would make the best spot for a morning java.

The distance between the two lakes is only 14 km (8.6 miles), about 25 minutes’ drive.

The paved mountainous road will offer great views of several glaciers and peaks, so you can appreciate this outing even more. Among these sights are Mt.Temple , the tallest peak in the Lake Louise area with an elevation of 3544 meters (11627 feet), Panorama Peaks at around 2800 meters (9186 feet), and the The Valley of the Ten Peaks averaging around 3234 meters (10610 feet) and many more. These are likely the ones that your eyes will be drawn to.

MORAINE LAKE:

After arriving at Moraine Lake, you may wonder where the best location is to get the best views/shots of the lake. The locals’ favourite is the Rockpile , which is short and easily accessible. It usually takes about 10 minutes to reach the top. This easy trail is about 0.4 km (0.25 miles) long. From there, you get a fantastic perspective of the magical turquoise colour of Moraine Lake . You can wander on the designated walking paths to see the lake from different angles. Most days, you can see the Ten Peaks’ reflection on the lake’s surface. The image speaks a thousand words.

Moraine Lake is nestled deeper within the mountains and is very close to the steep couloirs, some still covered with snow and ice from the previous winter months.

Although Moraine Lake is a bit smaller than Lake Louise, it does not fall short of the WOW factor. Its altitude is 1884 meters (6181 feet), and its depth is 14 meters (46 feet).

So, where’s the party at? Moraine Lake is chilling in Banff National Park , Alberta, Canada. It is 95 km from Canmore , 72 km from Banff , and 15 km from Lake Louise Village . It’s like the cool kid on the block, surrounded by ten majestic peaks that keep the vibe absolutely breathtaking. And when I say the water here is blue, I mean it’s like someone spilled a giant bucket of blue paint and thought, “Yeah, that looks about right!”

But not everyone was peacefully napping. Some visitors decided that the Moraine Lake parking lot was the perfect venue for an impromptu midnight party. It was like a wildlife disco, with noise, party lights, and the occasional chipmunk dancing around.

Suppose you preferred a daytime adventure. Good luck! Around 5,000 cars were turned away daily, creating a traffic jam that rivalled the morning rush hour in a big city. It was like trying to catch a glimpse of a rare species – the elusive Moraine Lake parking spot. Can you imagine hungry sharks circling their prey? Well, picture that, but with cars circling the turn-off to Moraine Lake road, eagerly waiting for the gate to magically swing open for a brief moment.

This parking predicament led to a new form of street art – cars decorating the narrow Moraine Lake road, creating a vehicular obstacle course for us, the brave tour guides, and shuttle drivers. It was like navigating through a maze of cars while juggling flaming torches. Not an easy feat!

But why do so many people find sunrise as the best time?

Picture this: you arrive at the lake as the world is waking up. Birds are chirping, and chipmunks are saying hello. Everything is fresh and about to start a new day. You are slowly walking up the Rock Pile , a 400-meter-long one-way trail, while chipmunks are curiously peeking out from behind the rocks. It’s still a bit dark. The trail is short and a little steep.

But don’t worry, it is well-maintained and has stairs. We also provide you with headlamps to light up your way. The elevation gain is only 30 meters (98 feet). You reach the viewpoint at the Rock Pile and find an excellent spot for the show. You take a deep breath, and the show of the sunrays slowly starts at the very tops of the Ten Peaks . Nature paints the mountains in shades of pink and orange while the lake reflects this magic on its surface.

The water in the morning is calm on most days, providing you with a perfect mirror reflection so clear you get almost lost in it. As the sun rises, the spectacular “20-dollar view” opens before you. Why “20 dollars view”? It sounds kind of cheap, doesn’t it? According to us, it really is a multi-million dollar view, but the reason behind this name is the fact that this view was depicted on a 20-dollar Canadian bill in the past. You are looking around and thinking, this must be just a dream. It feels like you entered a postcard, except you are right there in the real world with fresh mountain air. Our mountain air can be so fresh that you might feel a little chilly. We recommend dressing warmly, in layers, and bringing your hat and gloves just in case. If you still feel cold, we provide cozy blankets that will help you to enjoy the moment to its fullest.

The chipmunks will most likely approach you, expecting you to share your breakfast with them. But hold on a second before you start sharing (they’re adorable, we know). Remember, it’s best to enjoy wildlife from a distance. Plus, feeding them could get you in trouble with Parks Canada. They are wild animals, and we should not teach them to rely on us to secure food.
