2026 Paddling Restrictions: Banff National Park

Parks Canada introduced water zone regulations effective spring 2026. Three popular lakes now have restrictions on paddling and personal watercraft. Lake Louise remains open with a required AIS Prevention Self-Certification Permit (free). Full details: parks.canada.ca

Banff and Bow Valley

Banff and Canmore offer two distinct canoeing settings each, a moving river run through the valley and a calm lake paddle, with rental operators in both towns. Most of these put-ins are 30 to 60 minutes from Canmore.

The Banff Canoe Club operates guided and self-guided trips from Wolf Street. Paddle downstream as Mount Rundle rises on your left beaver, osprey, and great blue heron along the corridor.

Three shallow lakes five minutes from downtown Banff, connected by narrow channels through beaver dams and cattail marsh. No current, no wind exposure, and the mountain reflections early morning are exceptional.

Start your canoe adventure in the charming town of Canmore. Paddle along the Bow River, surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Canadian Rockies. The gentle current and scenic views make this a perfect trip for all skill levels. After a day on the water, explore Canmore’s vibrant downtown, filled with quaint shops and cozy cafes.

Multiple put-in and take-out points through the Bow Valley. Green Tongue Adventures runs guided canoe tours from Canmore. The Ha Ling Peak escarpment is a constant backdrop gentle enough for confident beginners on calm days.

Quarry Lake

A former limestone quarry turned paddling lake, 10 minutes from downtown Canmore. Clear turquoise water enclosed by cliff faces. Canmore Adventures rents canoes on-site by the hour.

Two Jack Lake

Two Jack Lake, located near Banff, is a serene destination for a relaxing canoe trip. Paddle through its crystal-clear waters, surrounded by the towering peaks of the Rockies and lush forests. The calm and peaceful atmosphere of Two Jack Lake makes it an ideal spot for a leisurely day of paddling and enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

Quarry Lake

Drive-up shoreline access 13km northeast of Banff townsite. Calm, clear, framed by Mount Rundle and forested slopes. AIS permit required (free, available online). No on-site rentals canoes can be transported from Banff. Far fewer visitors than the main park lakes.


Lake Louise and Kananaskis Country

Lake Louise is the benchmark canoe destination in Canada, the Fairmont Chateau boathouse has rented canoes on the lake since the early 1900s. Early morning is when the water earns its reputation. Canmore Travel drops directly at the Chateau.

The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise operates a boathouse with canoe rentals from late spring through early fall. The lake sits at 1,731 meters elevation emerald water, Victoria Glacier above, limestone walls on three sides. Whirling disease was confirmed in 2025; paddling remains permitted, but an AIS Prevention Self-Certification Permit is required before launching. Early morning visits give the clearest water and fewest other canoes on the lake.

While Nakiska is best known for its ski resort, it also offers excellent canoeing opportunities on the Kananaskis River. Paddle through the picturesque Kananaskis Valley, where you can enjoy a mix of gentle stretches and thrilling rapids. Just off Highway 40 at the entrance to Kananaskis Country. Kananaskis Outfitters rents canoes and kayaks on-site. Sheltered, consistently calm, and surrounded by Kananaskis peaks. One of the most accessible paddle destinations within range of Calgary and Canmore.

Spray Lakes Reservoir

A large, remote reservoir in Spray Valley Provincial Park, accessible from Canmore via the Smith-Dorrien Trail. Best paddled in the morning before afternoon winds develop. A less-visited alternative with a genuine wilderness feel. Boat launch at Driftwood Day Use area.

Jasper National Park

Jasper National Park offers more variety for canoeists than any other destination on this list two rental lakes with different settings, a quieter neighbouring lake, and a genuine wilderness river through elk meadows and boreal forest.

Jasper National Park offers some of the most scenic canoeing in the Rockies. Paddle on Pyramid Lake or the Athabasca River, surrounded by dense forests and towering peaks. Jasper’s pristine waters and abundant wildlife make this an unforgettable canoeing destination. Be sure to take in the tranquil beauty of this vast wilderness area, far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Neighbouring but smaller and less visited than Pyramid Lake. Canoes from Pyramid Lake Lodge. Better wind protection and noticeably fewer paddlers mid-day.

Athabasca River

Columbia Valley

Lake Windermere is one of the warmest lakes in British Columbia a wide, calm 26km flatwater lake that transitions into the internationally significant Columbia River Wetlands. Canmore Travel reaches the Columbia Valley in under 2 hours.

Golden Paddle and Columbia Wetlands Outpost offer canoe rentals 7km south of Golden on an 11km self-guided section of the Columbia River, one of the longest inland wetland systems in North America. Narrow backchannels, beaver dams, osprey nests, and mountains visible in every direction. One of the most memorable flatwater canoe routes in the Canadian Rockies.

Fernie offers a unique canoeing experience on the Elk River, where you can enjoy calm waters and dramatic mountain scenery. This destination is ideal for those looking to combine their canoeing adventure with a bit of white-water excitement. After your paddle, relax in this quaint mountain town known for its friendly atmosphere and vibrant arts scene.

Elk River (Lower Sections)

The lower reaches of the Elk River past Fernie are well-suited for canoe float trips. Kozy Kamp offers a 6-mile Trestle Bridge float and a 12-mile full-day option. The river moves at a relaxed pace through the Elk Valley, surrounded by the Lizard Range, a good choice for paddlers who want a river experience without technical whitewater.
