TASTE THE Canadian ROCKIES

Food and Drink in the Canadian Rockies

The Canadian Rockies have quietly built one of the strongest culinary and craft-beer scenes in western Canada. From Canmore's long-established mountain restaurant row to the award-winning kitchens of Banff and the legendary Jasper Brewing Company inside a national park, there is far more to eat and drink here than the scenery suggests. Canmore Travel provides private shuttle service to dining and culinary destinations across the region, getting you there and back without anyone worrying about the drive.

How Canmore Travel fits in: We provide private shuttle transportation to destinations across the Canadian Rockies from Canmore, Harvie Heights, or Banff. We do not organize food tours, restaurant reservations, or culinary events.

Alberta Rockies

The Alberta Rockies food and drink scene runs from Canmore's long-established independent restaurant corridor to the brewpubs of Banff and Jasper, the iconic CPR railway dining at Lake Louise, and elevated summit dining on Mount Norquay.

Banff's dining scene is built on independent kitchens rather than hotel restaurants alone. Long-standing institutions on Bear Street and Banff Avenue range from locally sourced farm-to-table menus to reliable apres-ski bar stops. The Banff Ave Brewing Co brews small-batch ales year-round, with a full food menu and a rooftop level that opens in warmer months above the townsite.

Banff

Canmore's dining corridor on 8th Street and Railway Avenue supports one of the strongest independent restaurant scenes in the Alberta Rockies. Long-standing institutions include Crazyweed Kitchen and Tavern 1883 for elevated mountain dining. Grizzly Paw Brewing, established in 1996, is one of the oldest craft breweries in Alberta and brews with Rocky Mountain water on Railway Avenue.

Canmore

Jasper Brewing Company, established in 2005, is the first craft brewery to open inside a Canadian national park. The brewpub on Connaught Drive in the Jasper townsite serves rotating ales and lagers alongside food. Coco's Cafe and Bear's Paw Bakery round out a compact but genuinely good food scene within walking distance of the town centre.

Jasper

Lake Louise dining is anchored by the Lake Louise Station Restaurant, which occupies two restored 1920s Canadian Pacific Railway dining cars on Sentinel Road, and the multiple restaurants inside the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise with direct Victoria Glacier views. The Poppy Brasserie serves all-day dining in a bright lake-facing room, and afternoon tea books well in advance during peak season.

Lake Louise

Mount Norquay's Cliffhouse Bistro, perched at the summit and accessible by chairlift, offers mountain dining above the Banff townsite with panoramic Bow Valley views. Originally built as a tea house in 1952, it now serves a focused food and drinks menu. It is one of the most accessible elevated dining experiences in Banff National Park, with no hiking required to reach the summit.

Mount Norquay

Revelstoke has a developed food scene for a town of its size, supported by a strong international ski tourism base. Craft breweries, farm-to-table restaurants, and well-established mountain town diners coexist in the compact downtown core. The Quartermaster Brew Pub and several independent restaurants have earned strong reputations among the international ski and outdoor tourism community.

BC Mountain Towns

The BC side of the Rockies supports a growing food and craft beverage scene anchored by Fernie, Golden, Invermere, and Panorama, each with a distinct food culture shaped by its geography and tourism base.

Fernie's food scene reflects its mountain town character: hearty, approachable, and anchored by locally owned establishments. The Fernie Brewing Company produces award-winning ales and lagers with Rocky Mountain water and has become a regional craft beer destination. Farm-to-table dining has taken hold among the newer establishments along 2nd Avenue, alongside long-standing mountain town favourites.

Fernie

Golden's dining scene includes craft distilleries alongside strong mountain cafe culture. The Eagle's Eye Restaurant at the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort summit is the highest-elevation restaurant in Canada, serving meals at 2,450 metres with panoramic Columbia Valley views accessible by gondola. Whitetooth Brewing and several independent restaurants anchor the downtown food scene year-round.

Golden

Invermere and the Columbia Valley's warmer microclimate supports an established winery scene alongside a strong Main Street restaurant corridor. The valley's agricultural base connects directly to local menus, with locally sourced ingredients common across both casual and sit-down dining. The lakeside setting makes dining with water and mountain views a standard part of the experience.

Invermere

Panorama Mountain Resort's base village includes casual and sit-down dining that serves both ski visitors and summer mountain bikers. The Toby Creek Lodge restaurant offers Columbia Valley views from the base. The resort's quieter, less crowded character compared to Banff-area destinations carries through to the dining experience, with a more relaxed pace and shorter wait times throughout the season.
