Canmore

Alberta's top cycling hub has world-class trail networks inside a mountain town.

The Canmore Nordic Centre is Alberta's premier cycling destination, with over 65 kilometres of trails built to competition standard on a forested plateau directly above Canmore. The venue hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics as a Nordic skiing facility and has since evolved into a cycling hub that has welcomed UCI World Cup events. Trails cover everything from beginner-friendly loops to demanding technical singletrack.

The Highline Trail is Canmore's most celebrated beginner-to-intermediate cycling route, running 8.5 kilometres one-way along the base of the Palliser Range with panoramic views of the Bow Valley below. The trail is almost entirely natural-surface singletrack wide enough to build confidence but with enough flow to keep more experienced riders engaged. Most riders plan a shuttle to avoid the out-and-back.

The Benchlands trail network sits at the edge of Canmore's residential neighbourhood and is the first place many local riders go after work. The system connects short loops and connector trails with a mix of easy gravel paths and technical singletrack. It is less dramatic in scenery than the Highline or Nordic Centre but more accessible and lower-stakes, with bail-out options throughout.

Banff

Paved parkways, mountain climbs, and trails right from Banff town.

Banff National Park offers cycling routes for every type of rider. The Bow Valley Parkway runs between Banff and Lake Louise along a two-lane road with minimal vehicle traffic. It is one of the most scenic road rides in the Rockies, with regular wildlife sightings along the way. For a harder effort, Tunnel Mountain Drive climbs directly from the townsite with steep switchbacks and panoramic views across the Bow Valley.

Kananaskis

The best cross-country singletrack network in Alberta and surprisingly unknown outside the province.

West Bragg Creek, accessed from the Elbow Valley in Kananaskis Country, is widely considered the finest cross-country cycling destination in Alberta. The trail network covers more than 70 kilometres of purpose-built singletrack across varying terrain. The Rae Creek Flow Trail is a standout highlight: a purpose-designed flow trail that rewards speed and rhythm. The drive from Canmore is approximately 45 minutes.

Beyond West Bragg Creek, the broader Kananaskis Country trail system includes cross-country and multi-use trails spread across Spray Lakes, Ribbon Creek, and Peter Lougheed areas. These trails range from mellow gravel road rides along Spray Lake to more challenging dirt singletrack through old-growth forest. Timing matters because trails at higher elevations can remain snow-covered into June.

Icefields Parkway

Road cycling on one of the world's great scenic corridors with lift-accessed descents at the end.

The Lake Louise area offers cycling at every level of commitment. The Bow Valley Parkway between Banff and Lake Louise is one of the most scenic road rides in Canada. It is relatively flat, lightly trafficked, and lined with views of the surrounding peaks and river. For mountain bikers, the Moraine Lake Highline Trail provides a challenging route with technical sections and serious elevation gain. From July through September, the Lake Louise Ski Resort operates a chairlift-accessed bike park with downhill, enduro, and flow trails for gravity-oriented riders.

Lake Louise

The Icefields Parkway running past Bow Lake is widely considered one of the most scenic road cycling routes in the world. The highway corridor climbs gradually from Lake Louise to Bow Lake at 1,920 metres a sustained, manageable grade with glacial turquoise water to one side and the peaks of the Continental Divide rising on both. Vehicle traffic is light enough that cycling the Parkway feels like a private road on most weekday mornings.

Jasper National Park

Paved trails through town and wilderness routes into the backcountry.

Jasper National Park's cycling routes range from the relaxed Jasper Discovery Trail, a paved path winding through town and along the Athabasca River, to the more demanding Overlander Trail, which covers rugged terrain with views across the park's iconic mountain landscapes. The park's size means genuinely low-traffic roads and singletrack, making Jasper a destination that rewards the drive from Canmore with a quieter, more remote cycling experience.
