STAND UP UNDER THE PEAKS
Paddleboarding in the Canadian Rockies
Paddleboarding in Banff means gliding across water so clear you can see the bottom at three metres, surrounded by peaks that reach 3,000 metres above sea level. The best SUP destinations in Banff and the Canadian Rockies are flatwater lakes and going in the morning before the afternoon wind builds makes the difference between a great session and a rough one.
How Canmore Travel fits in:
We provide private shuttle transportation to paddleboarding destinations across the Canadian Rockies and BC Interior. We do not organize or guide the SUP trips themselves. We get you to the water from pickup locations in Canmore, Harvie Heights, or Banff.

Paddleboarding Destinations in the Canadian Rockies
Canmore Travel provides transportation to all destinations below. The paddling itself is self-guided or through local outfitters. We handle the drive so you can focus on the water.
Banff and Bow Valley
Banff has the best SUP infrastructure of any base town in the Rockies. Bow Valley SUP rents inflatable boards by the hour or day, with access to lake and calm river paddling. The Vermilion Lakes are among the most popular SUP spots near Banff.
Vermilion Lakes
Flatwater
Three shallow, connected lakes five minutes from downtown Banff. Sheltered from wind by surrounding slopes, no current, consistent calm conditions. One of the most popular SUP locations near Banff. The mountain reflection on the water surface early morning is exceptional. Wildlife: beaver, osprey, and elk along the shoreline.
Johnson Lake
Flatwater
Located 6km northeast of Banff townsite. Warm for a Banff-area lake, calm conditions throughout the day, and far fewer visitors than the main tourist areas. A good choice for a relaxed morning session without the crowds.
Banff
Canmore
Quarry Lake
Flatwater
A former limestone quarry turned paddling lake, 10 minutes on foot from downtown Canmore. Calm, clear, turquoise water enclosed by cliff faces. Bow Valley SUP rents inflatable paddleboards by the hour starting at $39 CAD. The most accessible SUP rental location in the Bow Valley.
Bow River (Calm Sections)
Moving Water
The calm, wide sections of the Bow River through Canmore allow for a relaxed SUP float with mountain views. Wind can be a factor through open stretches, morning paddles recommended. Better suited for paddlers comfortable managing a board in moving water.
Two Jack Lake
Two Jack Lake
Flatwater
Drive-up access to the shoreline makes unloading an inflatable board easy. The lake is calm in the mornings, with predictable conditions and clear water. AIS prevention permit required (free). No on-site rentals. Boards are typically rented in Canmore and transported to the lake. Afternoon wind can pick up across the open water; morning sessions strongly recommended.
Lake Louise and Kananaskis Country
Morning SUP on Lake Louise, before the afternoon wind develops, is among the most visually extraordinary paddleboarding experiences in Canada. Boards must be brought by guests; no SUP rentals at the Chateau boathouse.
Kananaskis offers two SUP settings within the same mountain landscape, a calm, beginner-friendly lake with on-site rentals and a larger alpine reservoir for experienced boarders. Both are within 1 hour of Canmore.
Lake Louise
Flatwater
An AIS Prevention Self-Certification Permit is required before launching. The emerald, glacier-fed water and limestone walls create a setting unlike any other SUP destination in the Rockies. Boards must be brought by guests. No SUP rental at the Chateau boathouse. Best on the water by 7–8am. Conditions are glassiest in the first two hours after sunrise. Canmore Travel drops directly at the Fairmont Chateau.
Lake Louise
Barrier Lake
Flatwater
Kananaskis Outfitters rents SUP boards on-site right off Highway 40. Sheltered and consistently calm in the mornings. One of the easiest, most accessible SUP destinations within range of Calgary and Canmore.
Spray Lakes Reservoir
Flatwater
Large alpine reservoir in Spray Valley Provincial Park via Smith-Dorrien Trail. Morning conditions are calm; afternoon winds can create significant whitecaps. Boat launch at Driftwood Day Use area.
Barrier Lake and Spray Lakes
Jasper National Park
Jasper's two premier SUP lakes offer on-site rentals and dramatically different settings, one facing an iconic mountain, one tucked beside a historic mountain lodge. Morning timing is key at both; afternoon wind builds reliably on Pyramid Lake.
Pyramid Lake
Flatwater
SUP rentals available on-site at Pyramid Lake Lodge, 7km north of Jasper townsite. Morning conditions are often glass-calm, with Pyramid Mountain reflected in the surface. Afternoons can often be windy. We recommend starting early. Rentals from 10am on a first-come, first-served basis.
Lac Beauvert
Flatwater
The Jasper Park Lodge boathouse rents SUP boards. Calm, clear water set among boreal forest. The most comfortable SUP experience in Jasper. There are facilities nearby, consistent calm conditions, and one of the most scenic locations in the national park.
Jasper
Columbia Valley
Lake Windermere is the standout SUP destination in the Canadian Rockies region and one of the warmest lakes in British Columbia, with 26 kilometres of calm flatwater and a mountain backdrop. This is the headline destination on this page for a reason.
Lake Windermere
Flatwater
Columbia River Paddle rents SUP boards from two locations: Kinsmen Beach (sheltered bay, ideal for beginners) and the Invermere Launch (open lake access). Lake Windermere's warm water is among the warmest in BC, which makes paddleboarding comfortable from June through September without a wetsuit. Guided SUP tours through the Columbia River Wetlands also available, with osprey, eagles, and herons regularly visible.
Invermere
Lake Windermere (Panorama Access)
Flatwater
Panorama Mountain Resort operates on-site SUP, kayak, and canoe rentals for resort guests. Columbia River Paddle also serves the Invermere–Panorama corridor. The lake is large enough to spend a full day exploring different shoreline sections.
Columbia River Wetlands
Flatwater
Guided and self-guided SUP excursions through the Columbia River Wetlands near Panorama. It has narrow channels, abundant birdlife, and mountain views through the wetland corridor. A calm, wildlife-focused alternative to open lake paddling.
Panorama
BC Interior
Three BC destinations including Lake Revelstoke, one of the finest SUP lakes in the Canadian Rockies, and the Elk River near Fernie for moving-water SUP. Note: the Kicking Horse River is not suitable for SUP.
Lake Revelstoke
Flatwater
Revy SUP Rentals offers delivery to Lake Revelstoke, and Fine Line SUP provides boards from their Revelstoke shop. The lake is long, calm, and mountain-framed which makes it exceptional for SUP. Hidden beaches and waterfall inlets are accessible only from the water. Great Canadian Tours operates SUP sessions from a private dock.
Revelstoke
Golden
Columbia River (Flatwater Sections)
Flatwater
Golden River Adventures rents SUPs near Kicking Horse Resort. The Columbia River below Golden provides a calm, wide, flatwater route through the Columbia Wetlands, with osprey nests, beaver dams, and mountain views framing the paddle. The gentle current helps beginners maintain direction without fighting the board. Note: the Kicking Horse River is not suitable for SUP, flatwater Columbia sections only.
Elk River (Lower Sections)
Moving Water
Canyon Raft Co offers SUP on the calmer sections of the Elk River. The river's gentle current carries paddlers through the Elk Valley at a relaxed pace, with the Lizard Range visible above the treeline. Wind is minimal in the valley, and the current is slow enough for experienced SUP paddlers to manage easily. A different experience from lake SUP.
